RNS510 poor sound quality

So I've just had my RCD510 replaced with an RNS510 with reverse camera.

For some reason the quality of the sound of the new RNS is really poor when compared to the RCD.
The sound from my iPhone via the MDI cable (OE VW cable), is awful. It sounds weak, lacking any punch and I think it's even a little distorted.

The 'inter-web' has come up with a few different ideas but none of then seem definitive.

Any ideas?

Hello there BlondeFella, I had the RCD510 in my 2011 and have it currently in my 2015. Sound was just terrible. :(

After much trial and error I found the settings that work for me. Sound is a very subjective and personal, but giving you a link to what I have my settings at to make listening much better for me. Here it is, see my post #6 >>> http://www.mytiguan.com/index.php?/topic/32962-rcd-510-us-startup-volume-issues/ .

Good luck!

The RNS needs to be told what car it's been put in, what the speaker setup is, interior, seat covering, etc. This changes the internal EQ (not sliders) of the unit so the sound quality doesn't suffer. Needs doing by VW or via VCDS cable. This may be your issue as sound quality wise, the RNS510 is very good when set up properly.

The guy who put the unit in came highly recommended from another VW forum, but I have no idea what he did to set up the RNS.

Do you have any suggestions as a starting point for setting up the RNS?

The Tig is a mkii R line with cloth interior.

The fitter has suggested that I swap one of the wires within the quadlock. He says:

remove the RNS and look at the Blue plug in the quadlock, see if there is a wire in pin 2, make note of it incase you need to move it back, move it to pin 3

I've read that there are issues when swapping cheaper HU's for the RNS but I didn't think it was needed when swapping an RCD to an RNS. Any thoughts?

I appreciate that after market HU's may sound better but I wanted to keep the HU fully integrated into the MDI and Highline.

Constructive thoughts on this issue are most welcome!!!

It's got nothing to do with having cloth interior! The mdi cable issue is a well known one. Try that first and then if this doesn't work find someone with vcds to check the settings of the nav unit.

Yeah, the cloth/leather setting is for Bose in Audis, getting me VAGs mixed up. Story of my life ;-)

Didn't think VWs were that good to notice the difference haha

Is the issue just from the mdi cable playback?? If so then switching the wires will fix this.

The OPs car is 2013 model so no wiring changes should be needed. It's a straight plug and play. As has been mentioned a simple software update to the mmi should fix this.

Doesn't the Mac put an extra dot at the beginning of files or it creates another file that isn't needed. It does something a PC doesn't that stops the rns recognising the formatted card or usb etc.

Ive found that when playing from a USB source the music file sounds at its best if ripped from an original CD (remember those?) at a bit rate of 320kbps.

You can try fiddling with this:

VCDS under radio and coding you can find bit 5 which is eq. (might be different bit's for you but you'll find it)

You can problably choose presets and try out if any eq makes it sound better for you. (you can do it live while radio is playing, it will squeak after saving settings and then resumes)

And yeah.. this is tiguan and RCD/RNS has preset eq-s only for skoda.... it's like VW engineers just slapped that piece of * into dash and didnt give single thought how it will sound.

I'm using linear and I have selected "vw soundsystem or dynaudio" settings because I have external amplifier. And I still had to use high level in on my amp because selecting vw soundsystem or dynaudio will not activate nor convert speaker cables into RCA outputs!!! it marely drops volume from 24db to 12db.

So.. VAG also runs their high end dynaudio garbage signals over hi levels :mad2:

though VW and almost all oem headunits are total pile of garbage, best upgrade is to throw it out of window and install some cheap pioneer headunit without nav and cd - you will get 10x better sound!

also how ever you choose eq, sound system or no soundystem, or replace speakers to 2000€ ones, oem headunit will still **** up sound and it badly messes with rear speakers.. even linear eq, rears sound flat and dull.

about sdcard, you need to use fat32 format and wav or mp3.

mp3 320kbs or lossless wav but it takes up alot of sdcard memory.

also 32gb is max that this garbage headunit can support

but in the end, basically sorry that you upgraded rcd to rns which are same except nav and some other stuff.

better option would have been random alternative headunit with it's own camera in system. (also 10 times better camera image that can adapt low/bright light situations like pioneer)

some day I will upgrade to this: http://www.pioneer-car.eu/eur/products/mvh-av280bt
