Whilst my Tig was in for a service,I was told by the dealer that my console arm bushes were starting to split.Bearing in mind that the Tig has only covered almost 25000 miles,I was surprised that these needed replacing. Is this normal?

Failure is normal, they are under constant motion and stress. @ your mileage, hard to say. Could be the roads you drive, or the environment you live in. We have had previous posts about bushings and such failing and looking like they are years older than they are, and most of these are from the UK. Why I don’t know Salt air in places?

I've only had the Tig 6 months,so I can't comment on its previous life.Having less than 20000 miles on the clock,I doubt that it had a hard life.

The rear ones, encased in aluminum are prone to tearing due to the extra slits designed for comfort.

Mine need to be done soon and I am debating replacing them with more solid ones from one of the Audi vehicles.

There is the "S3" style Meyle HD that have the 2 holes but no slits

The TTRS are solid. Great for steering feel while it lasted.

As I bought the Tig in June 2017 from a Main Dealer, with a Warranty,I am currently hoping to get the bushes replaced under Warranty. My argument is,that the bushes must have been split at the time of purchase and as I have only covered 4000 miles in 6 months, the wear was already there.Fingers crossed!

What and where are these bushes? Never heard of a console arm before...

Just wondering as mine is on 21k miles and the 3 years are up in april. I'll be putting it in for a service early just to make sure anything that comes up is still under warranty.

They are the rear bushes on the bottom front wishbones.

I've just changed them on mine after they were picked up as an advisory at its annual MOT (car is approaching 10 years, 120k miles). Changing them was more straightforward than expected (did it myself), the new ones cost around £20 each.

I did inspect the old ones, although they both had a 1cm split in them, the rubber coating hadn't perished, and they visually looked in an okay condition.

I didn't notice any difference to the car with the new ones on.

I was informed of worn console bushes during my main dealer 4th year service, car has done 30,000 careful miles but service agent said they were only designed to last 3 years, quoted £550 to replace, think I’ll get them done at an independent garage before next service !!

Is your car still in Warranty? It might be an idea to try the warranty route. If it wasn't for my step-son pursuing this,I would have just paid to have the job done.

I think we are talking Control Arm Bushes?

I have used the Meyle HD product in other cars and was very good, so if they have something suitable it would definitely be worth considering.

Looking in the manual they call the arms suspension links #8, if I am interpreting right, so # 5 an also the pressed in one on the other side.

Did mine this morning on the drive as after 4 new tyres it pulled left slightly, the tyre firm wanted to charge £65 for 4 way tracking but I said no as I wanted to test it out first.

Up on the car ramps the r/h bush had a small crack the l/h had some large ones and the arm was off set. Two bushes cost £48 and 3/4 hour to swap them now drives straight and true.

To remove the bushes car was driven up the car ramps and then jacked up about 4" on the subframe rear bolt on the side I was changing, the 3 bolts removed and then lower the jack down and the arms drop down and out, the bushes knock off relitively easily using a punch on the centre boss. New ones fitted then jack back up 4" and it all realigns to put the bolts in.

Will now get the tracking checked rather than have it adjusted to compensate for wear.

Those who've had console bushes replaced under warranty - do you know how bad they were?

I've been told mine (both side) are splitting - was mentioned by the technician on the health check video and the splits were obvious.  However dealer says they're fine and car passed MOT without comment.
