Hi all,

The auto release on my parking brake works sometime and not other times....

For example, some mornings, I can simply drive off my drive without touching the P/B, other mornings, I have to manually release the P/B.

The drive is flat / level and I always park in the same spot.

It is hit & miss in other places too.

Any ideas please?

For info, the auto-hold works perfectly, as does the P/B when used manually.

I was under the impression that you have to release it manually when you first pull away after starting the engine. After that you don't need to touch the PB unless you turn engine off or apply the PB manually.

Do you always have your seat belt clicked in before trying to move? To release the parking brake it needs to be.

Cheers!

The parking brake ECU needs to see a positive attempt to pull away

Might sound silly but it has to see a lift on the clutch pedal and the accelerator being pressed at the same time for it to release the parking brake and allow the car to move

As if you were pulling away from a junction etc, if you just lift of the clutch (like me and a lot of others do) it won't release and will just hold you there

If you have auto hold on all the time, then there is no need to ever touch the parking brake switch ever. Unless there is a fault

I'd have the car scanned as a faulty drivers door lock can cause the system to not function (car thinks the door is open when it isn't) if the scan is clear then its user error

Capers, I can say that I have the same thing happen randomly just like you and in 6 years have never been able to find a common cause.

As others have said, it's the drivers seatbelt. Needs to be plugged in for auto hold to release on the foot pedal. Not plugged in, you have to press the button and release manually.

Hi everyone,

Thank you for the advice. There are a lot of things to consider.

That said, i always have: doors closed / seatbelt on.

Some mornings, the PB releases perfectly, other mornings, the car tries to drag * along the floor like a dog with worms ..... I'll be jiggered if I can work it out.

On another note, Chrisdut mentioned autohold, how do you set the autohold to be permanently on? I do use and one of the cars at work has it always active.
I have trawled the sub menu on the dash but cannot find anything in the settings related to autohold.

Thanks for all the answers.

On your model year autohold has to activated every time you start up..

It changed on the 2010 Tigs onwards and works great, my 08 Passat on the other hand you had to engage it every time you got in the car and it was a PITA.

Again, thanks for the advice.

You can change it to the later auto hold but it does involve a lot of work ie. abs modules and CECM swap AFAIK.

Jut a thought on this , my dad borrowed my tig a few weeks ago and he said the handbrake wouldn't release ,when I got back in it it was fine .
I discovered the fault was that my old man wasn't pressing the clutch down to the floor far enough for the PB to release ,jist a though 😐

This may be a silly question, but how can you pull away with the clutch pressed to the floor?

Of have I read this wrong ...?

I press the clutch down far enough to get the car in gear without any grinding .....

You've misread it...fully depress clutch-engage gear and move off... maybe your not depressing clutch enough to trigger pedal switch
