Haldex oil & filter change recommended by my VW dealer on my 3 year old with 15k miles on the clock, is this correct or  just fishing for work

4 years or 40k miles I believe IIRC

Yesterday I replaced the Haldex oil on my 2010 R Line, 40,000 miles

It seemed a very easy operation if I got it right!!

I bought a 850ml bottle of Haldex Generation 4 oil from my local VW main dealer, £31.00 plus VAT, they said the filter is not a service item and not even listed.

I was told the bottle is only 850ml because it is correct quantity and you put it all in.

Got everything nicely warmed up and located the filler and drain plugs on the coupling side of the unit. Short fill plug, very long drain 7mm Hex bolt.

Drained the oil out into a measuring jug and only got 485ml.

Left it to drain for a further two hours and only got another 10ml, so 495ml drained in total.

I used a small pump bottle to install the new oil, not much space to get to filler hole.

After pumping in 520ml the oil started to flow back out of filler hole.

So basically I only replaced what I had drained out.

Does that sound right?

Would the Haldex retain 330ml oil within it?

The old oil, that I knew was the original, looked in good condition to me

Did you have your Tig jacked up or on a ramp, because if the car is at an angle you might not get all the old oil out.

No, I had the car over a pit on the level

The drain plug is situated toward the front of the Haldex unit

Should I have jacked the rear of the car up?

I think then the difference between the two is the oil filter still retaining some oil.

Ahh yes!! Of course

I still find it strange that VW do not list the filter as a service item, and the VW main dealer I bought the oil from said they never replace the filters.

The only place I have found a filter so far is Neuspeed and they are priced at £85 I think.

Dealer just told me on my 3 year anual service I should have an oil at a cost of £85 as I have only done 15000 gentle on road miles I did not take it up . No mention of filter.

1/2 a bottle does not sound right. I just did mine 3 weeks ago and it consumed the whole bottle.

This is what I've found on ElsaWin about Haldex:

– Haldex coupling: Change oil
l Only applies to vehicles up to model year 2009
l Valid for vehicles with 4MOTION
l Information on arrangement of plugs → TPI 2017008
Every 60,000km

– Haldex coupling: Change oil
l Only applies to vehicles from model year 2010
l Valid for vehicles with 4MOTION
l Information on arrangement of plugs → TPI 2017008
Every 3 years

Resuming, up to model year 2009 is every 60000kms and after model year 2010 is every 3 years (kms not mentioned)

I did take the dealers advice and had it changed as I took out an extended warranty and did not wish to give them any excuse for turning down a repair.(I have a 2013 vehicle)

The nylon bit with the o-rings on the Volvo one is different than the one the aftermarket shops are selling for the Tig, https://www.ecstunin...ldex/ES2826162/

In the video, they had reused that nylon part, only the filter was replaced! Better replace it all...

Was chatting to a mate at work yesterday regarding Haldex units as he's got a T5 4 motion. It started with off with him saying he has a fault code that potentially pointed to a faulty PCB inside the control box, this was after he had sent his control system to these guys for diagnosis -

http://www.autofault...om/index-9.html

Anyway we got on to talking about filters and that VW say it's not a serviceable item, the guys at the above place advised that the filter should be replaced at oil change as it can damage the pump if it becomes clogged which is one of the things he suspected threw up the error code in the 1st place.

The oil and filter can be purchased from the above place I'm told. He also told me the filter is about £40.

I would never reuse the cap. AT 400 psi it would be too high a risk

Hi!

Here in Portugal, a genuine Volvo haldex filter (31325173) is 44,41€+VAT (23%=54,62€), filter only without the adaptor/support!
There is a complete kit filter here

Genuine haldex oil in VW, is 44,13€+VAT (23%=54,28€)

I think that the best choice is to buy a complete set:

- Filter kit
- Haldex oil G055175A2

Or this one from ebay

Replacing it all, it's always around 100€, but it would be better then repairing a pump or clutch!
