I've seen a few posts about Haldex oil changes, due at 40K miles. Mine's approaching 42K, it wasnt mentioned by dealer at last service so I'm planning on doing so myself.

A couple of questions if I may, Where is best place / value to buy oil and filter? VW stealer or is there an alternative supplier?

Is a filter removal tool actually required or could this be done with a generic oil filter removal tool?

What mileage is the differential oil due to be changed and what grade is required?

Only buy VW stuff for this, if you have a TPS, they sell to dealers and often the public, at a better price. Or local VAG dealers, such as SERE motors in Belfast who I have used for mail order bits many times.
I also did the gearbox oil (manual) at the same time.

The Haldex filter is 'lifetime' supposedly as it is still very difficult to get a replacement one. The tool you refer to is gen2 most likely, an L shaped spanner? The Tig has gen4 and is different, allen key if I recall, but left it in as I was fearful of rounding the head.

Thanks. What about the diff oil, have you changed it?

The week I got the Tig I changed the gear oil, diff and Haldex, as well as a service. All oils from TPS, there are so many variables it isn't worth risking aftermarket for negligible, if at all, savings.
Check the link in my sig, my fluid was black. Hence why full dealer history is a pseudo positive in my opinion, it had never been changed by 91k and I was lucky to change it in time.
Now it is at 105k, the gear changes are still fantastic.

If your Tig is 4 wheel drive, then despite VAG not indicating it is "ESSENTIAL", but is purely referred to under the section in the VW Booklet 1.1 Service as "Additonal work", I consider the Haldex oil change is absolutely essential - at the very least should you, like I have had recently; a potentially very expensive failure (at VW prices) of the Haldex system - you might be eligible for a "goodwill claim" to VW through a franchised dealership.

Obviously if VW put the requirement in their multi-vehicle booklet for 4WD vehicles it is recognised as necessary.  My Tiguan 2.0 200 tsi Sport requires a Haldex oil change at 40,000 miles but this should not be confused with, as can happen; the rear axle differential gear oil - it is a totally different and specialist oil for use in the Haldex system.  This might beg the question are those carrying out servicing and maintednance who are charged with changing the Haldex oli aware of this dfifference when draining and refilling of either or both of the rear Haldex and the seperate differential oils?

Please see my latest blog in the Engine and transmissions section of the Tiguan forum for events concerning my Haldex failure at 83K miles only!

When you said VW glosses over the Haldex fluid change, I had to look in my manual. "Service at 60,000 KM or one year from last service, whichever occurs first" Haldex clutch oil is clearly listed as a change item. It is again listed @ 120,000 KM

Service at 60,000 KM or one year from last service, whichever occurs first

What does the second part mean?  Not 1 year after last 'routine' service surely, or it would be an annual event!

I read this as the haldex oil should be changed at 60K. If after one year of having the haldex serviced and you only have 40K, then you should change the haldex oil. However, if after your last haldex servicing you do 60K after say 9 months, then it should be serviced.

Cheers!

I can see every 60K KM. The rest of what I quoted, I purposely did not explain because it makes no sense and made my head hurt just reading it.

Hows it put in then? Seen you tube videos with the cartridge filling upwards, is there a conventional filler point in the later ones?

Look at the pictures on here for the plugs.
http://forums.vwvort...d-Engine-Fluids

A syringe (100ml-500ml or whatever) with a length of appropriate hose is all I used

I had my diff swapped three weeks back and the garage were sent the more expensive grey 850ml bottle (£31), whereas when I bought the white 1L bottle two years back it was about £19. Worth inquiring about the 1L bottle when you call.

If the dealer looks up the car by VIN, the 850ml bottle will pop up. Get the 1L bottle part number off the web and ask by part.
