thanks shawng. tried that, took undertray off but a lot of other stuff in the way, radiator/shrouds/fans etc.thats what some other forums had said to others that have the same problem with other vw models.took to the dealers and they quoted £40 for parts &90 for labour which i am assuming is about an hour? i`ve read some horror stories on these forums where they`ve had to smash the grille to get at the latch. hope this is not the case with the tig, i`ll keep you posted with outcome for any others that have this problem.

My son's previous Goif (Mk6) had the cable snap. The dealer opened it with no problem and replaced the cable. it was under warranty and I'm afraid I don't know how it was done but there was no damage to any parts that we could see.

You could always bounce it back to the dealer, you state it's the first time you're opened the bonnet since it went into the dealers, tell them the truth and hopefully they will say bring it it and well take a look, you will likely have to pay for a replacement cable and a fitting charge, but I think that would be your easiest option, certainly worth a try.
